CYPRIANUS of Carthage, Saint

Opera aucta Gul. Morellii typographi Regij diligentia ac labore
Parisiis
Guillaume Desbois
1564
€400 - €500

In-folio (29 x 19,5 cm), [48]- 483 - [36] pp, large woodcut printer's device on title page. Beautiful initials. Old marginal annotations. Marginal wormholes in some lvs. Old calf binding, blind tooling, leather closing ties, red sprinkled edges, some stains on the covers, corners worn (some old rest.)

Ref. Adams C-3163. A dedication by the French humanist Adrian Turnebus to King Charles IX precedes the volume. The scholarly printer Guillaume Morel added a number of works, not published in previous editions. ""His gift of eloquence is evident in his writings. He was not a thinker, a philosopher, a theologian, but eminently a man of the world and an administrator, of vast energies, and of forcible and striking character. A careful critical edition was prepared by Latino Latini, and published by Manutius (Rome, 1563); Morel also went to the manuscripts (Paris, 1564); so did Pamele (Antwerp, 1568), but with less success"" (Catholic Encyclopaedia)
