Red chalk (sanguine), on laid paper, 183 x 250 mm. Unsigned. (glue marks and strips of blue backing paper from old collection album). A brilliant sheet with villagers dancing and drinking in an inn. Both the composition of the figures as their handling point towards a highly skilled Netherlandish artist working at the dawn of the 17th century, highly influenced by David Teniers the Younger. Red chalk figures such as this one were frequently used by Teniers and his followers such as Egbert Van Heemskerk, to whose style this sheet also shows some affinity. The verso side of the sheet contains some loose sketches of a cavalry figure and smaller figure sketches
