Jacques Charlier (1706-1800) was a pupil of François Boucher and can be considered as one of the best miniature painters of his generation working for Louis XV and Louis XVI. He specialized in mythological scenes, fĂȘtes galantes, and artistic allegories. It is this last iconographic category that these six drawn vignettes are situated, possibly intended as designs for book illustrations. They represent the allegories of History, Comedy, Music, Truth, Satire, and the Muses. Provenance: Coll. Stamp of Albert Van Loock (L. 3751). We add: Drawing attributed to same artist. Pallas Athena as protector of the Arts. 1753. Pen and black ink, grey and blue wash on laid paper with watermark, 135 x 255 mm, dated at lower edge ""1753"". (7 pcs)
