Rendered in a self-assured manner, this small sheet represents a peasant in early 17th-century attire. Dept to the composition is given my minute but precise addition of cross-hatching in the shadows. The sitting figures position are reminders of similar compositional tropes of the circle of Abraham Bloemaert; particularly his study sheets of pastoral scenes with peasants and farmers.
