"In-folio (45,3 x 30 cm), engraved architectural title, part title ""Theatrum passionis et mortis... Iesu Christi"", 175 illustrations on 139 double pages. Contents: 131 very large illustrations (40 x 50 cm) by different artists and 44 small illustrations pasted on 8 plates, by Luyken (not signed). Because of the generous dimensions, it was called 'Royaalbijbel'. 75 plates have 4 Dutch quatrains as text, 14 have a quatrain in Dutch with parallel French, German and English translations, whereas other plates have shorter monolingual or plurilingual verse or prose subscriptions, or none at all. Dutch blindstamped vellum over boards (soiled), spine on 9 raised bands"
"Most plates have only Visscher's publisher's signature, and others bear the name of the ""designer"" or painter copied, P.P. Rubens is prominently present (14), as is Maarten de Vos (11). Other names : D. Vinckboons, G. de Hondecoeter, Geertruy Rogmans, J. Savery, M. Heemskerck, A. Bloemaert, J. Jordaens etc. Full list available upon request. The prints had been published around 1663 by Elzevier with text, around 1680 Nic. Visscher published the plates without text. Ref. Hollstein XXXVIII p. 289. J. v.d. Waals (Prenten i.d. Gouden Eeuw van kunst tot kastpapier. 2006) published a stocklist by N. Visscher from 1680 in which 130 prints are described. We have all plates mentioned, some in a slightly different order, except for ""84. Petri Visschery"", but our copy has 2 unmentioned plates: ""John the Baptist's head on a plate"" and ""foot washing"" ""De Amsterdamse uitgever Claes Iansz. Visscher begon rond 1639 naast de heruitgave van de oudere Antwerpse bladen, met het uitgeven en drukken van bijbelprenten in groot- of royaalformaat. Veel van de voorstellingen waren nog gebaseerd op oudere reeksen, maar er werd ook gekeken naar Rubens en andere eigentijdse voorbeelden. De Visscher familie zou de verdere zeventiende eeuw een belangrijke rol spelen in de productie en verspreiding van de groot-formaat Bijbel of Royaalprenten"" (p.18).
