[LEAF from an ILLUMINATED MIDDLE DUTCH PRAYERBOOK, with an ANGEL]

Single leaf, in Middle Dutch, illuminated manuscript on vellum
[Eastern Netherlands
second half of 15th century]
€900 - €1.500

Single leaf, with a half-page high initial 'H' (opening ""Here du schalte optoen minn lippen ..."") in blue with white brushwork overlaying flowers and foliage, enclosing sprays of coloured foliage and all on a burnished gold ground, a full decorated border comprising coloured and gold text bars on two sides with flowerheads mounted along its body, and coloured acanthus leaves and hairline foliage terminating in gold leaves and seedpods, one half-length angel in gilt robes, emerging from a blue ring in border, with green wings and ruddy cheeks and lips, small initials in red and blue, capital touched in red, 17 lines of angular gothic bookhand, blue of large initial and gold scuffed in places, slightly trimmed at edges (affecting edges of borders), small spots and stains, else in good and bright condition, 134 by 95mm; in modern wooden frame (so reverse of leaf not examined)

While many of the individual elements (such as the dangling blue flower and half-length angel) can be found throughout Dutch fifteenth-century illumination, the arrangement of flowerheads facing the viewer on gilt bars in the centre of the borders points to the eastern Netherlands and models such as the Hours of Margriet Uutenham (see J.H. Marrow, The Golden Age of Dutch Manuscript Painting, 1990, no. 89, pp. 251-2, with pl. on p. 232)
