[CALENDAR LEAF, most probably for use in KOBLENZ]

Leaf from a Calendar (January and February), probably from a Psalter, in Latin, decorated manuscript on vellum
[western Germany (most probably Koblenz or vicinity)
12th century]
€800 - €1.200

Single leaf, with entries in black or faded brown ink, with rubrics and numbers in Roman numerals in red, one large 'KL' initial in gold edged in red (gold mostly chipped away), one large section of outer upper corner torn away (with loss of 'KL' initial on verso), stains and small holes, else fair condition, 180 by 140mm

From a portable codex most probably produced for use by a religious devotee from Koblenz or its vicinity. The presence of SS. Aldegund and Amand point to eastern France or the adjacent Low Countries and western Germany, but the presence of the rare local saint, Castor of Karden, on 13 February (in contemporary addition as ""Castoris +"") allows us to locate this leaf more precisely. Castor was a follower of St. Maximinus of Trier in the fourth century, who was ordained priest and settled at Karden on the Moselle in central western Germany as a hermit. In the ninth century his bones were transferred to a church dedicated to him in Koblenz, which became the main site of his worship
