PETRARCA, Franciscus

Psalmi confessionales
[Deventer
Albert Pafraet
c. 1514-1517]
€5.000 - €7.000

"8vo, [6] ff, illustrated with 2 allegorical woodcuts. Contents: an introductory psalm where Petrarca prays for God's mercy, in the seven following psalms, Petrarca confesses the seven deadly sins, then an conclusion and a 'Carmen de Septem peccatis capitalibus' by Rudolf van Langen. The woodcuts are to be attributed to the Dutch Bellaert Master. They remind of ""Dochter van Syon"" by G. Leeu (printed in 1492). On the title page 'Cognitio' goes out to inquire who wounded the daughter of Syon, on the last page, Spes, Fides and Cognitio comfort the daughter of Syon, who lays in bed. Some contemporary annotations. Later vellum binding, title gilt on spine"

Not to be confused with 'Psalmi pentientiales'. First edition of this text in the Low Countries. It is not certain that Petrarca was the real author. Cochin suggests that they could be imitations made in the sphere of influence of the Carthusians and Ludolphus de Saxonia. Not in NK. Only known copy from Belgian private collection. Ref. Machiels.
