11th century]
Large leaf with single column of 22 lines in a large and rounded Germanic Romanesque hand, capitals beginning each new reading touched in red, rubrics and simple initials in red (oxidised to silver in places), recovered from reuse as a pastedown in a later binding and hence somewhat scuffed to reverse (but legible), some small spots and stains, overall in good and presentable condition, 310 by 210mm
From a large and imposing Sacramentary with readings from the homilies of Gregory the Great and the Gospel of Matthew. The large and ornamental script here, written on a grand scale compares closely to the large ornamental script of an Ottonian Glossed Psalter produced in Cologne at the very end of the tenth century (now Cologne, Dom. Hs. 45: reproduced in the exhibition catalogue Glaube und Wissen, 1998, no. 40)
