[RUBENS, after]

6 coloured drawings on paper (early 18th c.)
€450 - €800

6 drawings (c 19 x 21.5 cm) after Rubens' paintings for the Antwerp Jesuit church. In very good condition

The 40 paintings by Rubens for the Carolus Borromeus Church of the Antwerp Jesuits were one of his most important large-scale works of interior decoration. They perished in the fire of 1718. Several sets of copies after the ceiling paintings had however been made just before the catastrophe. The most important set was drawn by the young Dutch Rococo artist Jacob de Wit (1695*1754) in 1711/12. The present drawings are probably early 18th c. copies after De Wit. Subjects: The adoration of the Magi, St. Mary Magdalene, St. John Chrysostom, St. Augustine, St. Margaret, St. Gregory the Great adoring the Madonna. Ref.: J.R.
