Rare first edition of this important work by Carel van Mander (1548-1606), one of the highlights of Dutch renaissance literature, and the first work on the theory and history of art to be published in the Netherlands. It treats the lives of classical, Italian, and Dutch painters, including Van Mander’s contemporaries Hendrik Goltzius, Abraham Bloemaert, Jacques de Gheyn, David Vinckeboons, etc. The second part discusses the illustration of Ovid’s Metamorphoses and is still an important source for our knowledge of the iconography of the period.
