€1.600 - €2.800

4to (20.5 x 15 cm), [40], 700, [2 = errori], [3 = extra leaves containing the additional chapter 17 from book six] p, portrait of the author after Annibale Fontana on B1, full calf binding of 18/19th c. (some rubbing, joint broken)

Rare first edition of the magnum opus of Renaissance theory of art, with the first coherent systematical classification and orderly arrangement of all elements of drawing and painting. The work is divided into seven books, devoted respectively to proportion, actions and gestures, color, light, perspective, iconography and the practice of painting. It is completed by a full list of names not only of all then known artists and architects, but also of mathematicians, both classical and modern. It is an important supplement to Vasari's Vite as it contains many useful information on Lombard artists, neglected by the latter. The MACCLESFIELD copy (blindstamps and bookplate)
